If I could point to one luxury in our home that we couldn’t easily part with, I know what it would be - our pergola. It was the soundest investment we ever made because it gives our family one of our greatest pleasures - open air living in Ireland all year round. The roof opens, retracts and closes at the push of a button, so it’s always comfortable, rain or shine. It’s the design centrepiece of our small city garden creating the minimalist architectural look; in fact we designed the garden around it. We decided on a 20m2 free standing structure away from the house which forms a semi-enclosed outdoor lounge area containing a BBQ kitchen and a dining space to entertain family and friends. Aside from being our favourite spot for entertaining, it’s been a safe outdoor space for children to play, teenagers to congregate and more recently, a space to exercise at home.

My personal experience of the benefits of a pergola over the years combined with the interest it has always generated from friends and family got me thinking. It’s said we spend on average 90% of our time indoors. What’s needed more than ever is a way to enjoy maximum time outside in the open air without ever having to worry about the weather spoiling things.

And Arch Outdoor was born.
